WEIGHTAGE
In this guide
Looking for JEE Main chapter-wise weightage to plan your 2027 preparation? In the published 2026 compilation used here, Optics led Physics, Coordination Compounds led Chemistry, and Coordinate Geometry led Mathematics. These are useful starting points for revision, but past frequency does not fix what your examination shift will contain. [3]
There is no official fixed chapter-wise percentage allocation in the NTA 2027 syllabus and paper pattern reviewed for this guide. NTA specifies the syllabus and subject-level structure. The chapter percentages below are historical calculations based on a third-party 2026 question compilation, not an NTA forecast for 2027. [1][2]
JEE Main subject-wise weightage for 2027
The official Paper 1 pattern gives equal marks to the three subjects. Each contains 20 multiple-choice questions and five numerical-value questions. [2]
| Subject | Questions | Maximum marks | Share of total marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physics | 25 | 100 | 33.33% |
| Chemistry | 25 | 100 | 33.33% |
| Mathematics | 25 | 100 | 33.33% |
| Total | 75 | 300 | 100% |
The normal marking rule is +4 for a correct answer, −1 for an incorrect answer and zero for an unanswered question, in both sections. Read the current bulletin for evaluation exceptions and any subsequent changes. [2]
A subject's share is different from a chapter's share. All percentages in the following chapter tables use that subject's 475 compiled questions as the denominator—not the 1,425 questions across all three subjects.
How we calculated the chapter-wise percentages
We used the 2026 column of Edurack's subject-wise question tables, which each total 475 questions. Its year overview reports 1,425 questions overall. CalcuPortal recalculated each percentage and checked the totals. The chapter counts also agree with the January-plus-April totals published by Careers360. [3][4][5][6][7]
Chapter share (%) = chapter question count ÷ total subject question count × 100.
The tables describe the source's 2026 compilation. We have not independently reclassified every original question, and the sources may share underlying data. Agreement between them is a consistency check, not proof of independent counting. Figures are rounded to one decimal place, so displayed percentages may not add to exactly 100%.
We retain broad units used in the source analysis. A unit such as Coordinate Geometry contains several topics; comparing it directly with one smaller textbook chapter can be misleading.

The source label “Physics and Measurement” corresponds to the “Units and Measurements” heading in the current syllabus. Use the official PDF to check the precise topic coverage rather than relying on a label alone. [1]
How to use the Physics table
Treat the list as a revision order, then adjust it to your preparation. If you already understand a unit but lose marks through calculation errors, a short practice-and-review cycle may help more immediately than starting a difficult unit from zero.
For each unit, prepare a small review sheet covering definitions, formula conditions, units and typical errors. Then attempt an unseen set of previous-year questions without checking solutions midway. Record whether a wrong answer came from a concept gap, a sign convention, an algebra error or a misread diagram. That distinction tells you what to revise next.

How to use the Chemistry table
Build your revision around understanding, recall and calculation. A question-frequency table cannot tell you which of these is currently limiting your score.
For numerical work, write down the assumptions and units before substituting values. For reactions, practise identifying the starting material, reagent and conditions before predicting the product. For factual material, use short recall sessions and return to the relevant textbook passage when you make an error.
Do not skip foundational ideas simply because their own row sits below a larger unit. A basic concept can be needed inside a question classified under another chapter.

How to use the Maths table
A large unit needs a topic-level plan. The official Coordinate Geometry unit includes straight lines, circles and conic sections; “finish Coordinate Geometry” is therefore too broad to be a useful daily target. Break it into smaller tasks and test each one. [1]
Track the time taken as well as accuracy. A question solved correctly after twenty minutes at home may still reveal a method that needs improvement. After checking the solution, write one sentence explaining the key step, then try a similar unseen problem later.
Keep basic algebra and function skills active while revising other units. If the difficulty is an earlier prerequisite, repair that gap before repeating increasingly difficult questions.
What does 10% chapter weightage actually mean?
Consider a hypothetical set of 500 questions from one subject. If 50 are assigned to one chapter, that chapter's observed share is 10%.
It does not follow that every 25-question paper contains exactly 2.5 questions from that chapter. Individual papers contain whole numbers of questions, and the distribution can vary between shifts. Nor does the percentage describe the marks you will earn: your score depends on the questions you answer correctly and incorrectly.
When comparing two weightage articles, check four things:
- Year: Is the table based on one year or several years?
- Coverage: Does it include January, April, selected shifts or all listed papers?
- Grouping: Are topics combined into broad units or split into smaller chapters?
- Denominator: Is the percentage a share of one subject or the entire paper?
If those details differ, the percentages are not directly comparable.
Class 11 vs Class 12 weightage in JEE Main
The reviewed NTA documents do not prescribe a fixed Class 11-to-Class 12 question ratio. Avoid planning around an assumed 40:60 or 50:50 split. [1][2]
Use the current syllabus as your coverage checklist. When an analysis separates chapters by school class, check how it handles topics taught across multiple units or arranged differently by different boards. A class-wise split is less useful than knowing which concepts you can solve accurately under exam conditions.
Which chapters should you study first?
Use historical frequency alongside your own test results. The following is a suggested planning method, not a prediction of future questions.
| Your current situation | Recommended next step |
|---|---|
| You understand the chapter but make avoidable errors | Complete a timed question set, analyse errors and retest. |
| You can solve standard questions but struggle with variations | Practise mixed questions and explain why each method works. |
| You repeatedly get stuck on a prerequisite | Repair that prerequisite before moving to advanced problems. |
| A large unit is untouched | Split it into topics and schedule several manageable sessions. |
| A smaller unit is already strong | Keep it active through brief spaced revision. |
Do not allocate study time by copying the percentages directly. A chapter representing a small fraction of past questions can still need substantial work if you have not learned its foundations. Conversely, a chapter you already know may only need maintenance practice.
A practical weekly revision routine
Start the week with a timed mixed test. Choose your next tasks from the errors you actually made, then use the weightage tables to decide between equally urgent topics.
- First two study sessions: repair the main concept gaps identified in the test.
- Next two sessions: solve fresh chapter questions and review every wrong or skipped answer.
- Next session: revisit material studied earlier in the week without looking at notes first.
- Final session: take another mixed test and compare accuracy, time use and repeated errors.
Adapt the session length to your school or work schedule. The useful measure is whether your mistakes are becoming fewer and more specific, not how many chapters you mark “completed.”
Common mistakes when using JEE Main weightage
Treating a trend as a promise. Historical percentages help organise preparation; they do not reserve marks in your future paper.
Skipping everything below the top few rows. Narrow preparation leaves you dependent on a favourable distribution. Aim for syllabus coverage while giving extra revision to areas that need it.
Adding overlapping groups. If a source lists both a broad unit and its component topics, adding them may count the same questions twice.
Using an outdated syllabus checklist. Check the current official topic list before deciding whether something should be studied or omitted.
Confusing weightage with difficulty. A frequently tested unit is not automatically easy, and a less frequent unit is not automatically hard.
Frequently asked questions
Has NTA released official JEE Main 2027 chapter-wise weightage?
The official syllabus and bulletin reviewed for this guide do not assign fixed percentages to individual chapters. The tables on this page are historical analysis for planning revision. [1][2]
Are these actual JEE Main 2027 question counts?
No. They are 2026 question counts used to help students prepare for 2027. The table headings and calculation method identify that reference year explicitly.
Which chapters had the highest weightage in the cited 2026 analysis?
Optics led Physics, Coordination Compounds led Chemistry, and Coordinate Geometry led Mathematics in the compilation used here. These unit-level rankings do not guarantee the same order in 2027. [3]
Is the percentage based on the whole JEE Main paper?
No. Each chapter percentage is a share of its own subject's 475 compiled questions. Subject-level marks are shown separately near the beginning of the guide.
Can I prepare only high-weightage chapters for 99 percentile?
No chapter shortlist can guarantee 99 percentile. Use these tables to plan revision, then assess your coverage, accuracy and time management through mixed tests. Avoid treating an estimated number of questions as an assured score.
Should I ignore low-weightage chapters?
No. A lower historical share is not a reason to assume a chapter will be absent. Some topics also support work in other units. Prioritise without turning the table into a skip list.
Why do different websites show different weightage percentages?
Their year ranges, shift coverage, chapter groupings or percentage denominators may differ. Look for a clear method before comparing their numbers.
