Calculate your Vedic Lagna by birth time
Exact birth time and geographic coordinates are required. No birth data is sent from this calculator.
Important: Lagna changes rapidly with time and location. If your birth time is unknown, there is no reliable single ascendant to calculate. This tool uses an approximate Lahiri offset, not a precision-certified Panchang.

Quick answer: A Lagna Calculator finds the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at your exact birth time and birthplace. In Vedic astrology, this is the sidereal Ascendant / Janma Lagna. Its computation requires local clock time, latitude, longitude, time-zone conversion and an ayanamsa — not just a birth date.
What is Lagna or Ascendant in Vedic astrology?
Lagna (लग्न), also called Udaya Lagna or the rising sign, is the ecliptic point at the eastern horizon at a given time and geographic place. It is one of the fundamental reference points of a Vedic natal chart or Janam Kundli. The zodiac sign containing this point is called your Janma Lagna.
There are twelve possible rising signs, beginning with Mesha (Aries) and ending with Meena (Pisces). The sign rising at the birth moment depends on Earth's rotation and the observer's geographical location; there is no reliable table of Lagna based on calendar date alone.
In traditional Jyotish, the first whole-sign house is aligned with Lagna, and the next zodiac signs are assigned to subsequent houses. Traditional practitioners associate different interpretive themes with Lagna and its ruling planet, but those associations have not been scientifically validated as predictors of personality or life events.
How to Calculate Lagna from Date of Birth, Time and Place
- Record your birth date and clock time: enter the actual time noted in the birth record; inaccurate timing may alter the Lagna.
- Choose your birthplace: select Chennai, Bengaluru, New Delhi or another preset, or enter custom geographic latitude and longitude.
- Convert local clock time to UTC: historical time-zone rules and daylight-saving transitions must be respected.
- Find local apparent sidereal time: calculate Greenwich apparent sidereal time and add your birthplace's east-positive longitude.
- Find the ecliptic's eastern-horizon intersection: use local sidereal angle, terrestrial latitude and true obliquity of the ecliptic to find tropical ascendant longitude.
- Convert to sidereal zodiac: subtract approximate Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa and normalise the longitude into 0°–360°.
- Find your Lagna Rasi: divide by 30° to identify one of the twelve signs. The remaining degrees locate your ascendant within that sign.
- Review nearby birth times: inspect ±5, 15 and 30 minutes to see whether the sign changes near your entered moment.
Ascendant calculation formula
Let θ be local apparent sidereal time as an angle, φ the birthplace latitude and ε the true obliquity of the ecliptic. A standard eastern-ascendant formula is:
Tropical Ascendant = atan2(cos θ, −[sin θ × cos ε + tan φ × sin ε]), normalised to 0°–360°. Sidereal Lagna = (Tropical Ascendant − approximate Lahiri ayanamsa) mod 360°.
This uses the actual horizon/ecliptic geometry rather than a simplified “roughly 2 hours per sign” rule. The calculator makes all intermediate values visible so you can verify the exact inputs and mathematical conventions.
Why Birth Time, Latitude, Longitude and Time Zone Matter
The Lagna is highly location- and time-dependent. Two births at the same clock time in different cities can produce different Lagna signs because longitude affects local sidereal time and latitude affects the orientation of the eastern horizon relative to the ecliptic.
The ascendant moves through the twelve signs in about a sidereal day, but the time spent in each sign varies with location and season. A 10-minute error can be important near a boundary.
Latitude north/south and longitude east/west determine the local horizon calculation. Presets are city-centre approximations; adjust for a more precise birthplace if known.
Your birth record shows local clock time. Converting it to UTC requires the offset in effect on that date, potentially including daylight-saving changes or a repeated hour.
For example, someone born at 8:00 AM in Chennai and someone born at 8:00 AM in London did not necessarily arrive at the same UTC time. Also, the exact latitude matters even if both cities use the same time zone. A calculator that only asks for month and day cannot determine an individual rising sign.
CalcuPortal supports city presets and manual coordinates, selected IANA time zones and manual UTC offsets. The calculated result requires a valid birth time. For polar and very high latitudes (at or above 66° north/south), specialised horizon handling is needed; these coordinates are deliberately outside the supported range.
12 Lagna Names in English and Tamil with Ruling Planets
Each sidereal Lagna covers one 30° sign. The following table lists the Vedic names, Tamil names and traditional sign rulers. Rasi rulers are cultural/astrological conventions; they do not establish the trajectory or events of a person's life.
| # | Vedic Lagna | Tamil name | Traditional ruler | Sidereal span |

Tamil Lagna Calculator: லக்னம் by Birth Time
In Tamil astrology, Lagna is written as லக்னம், while the rising Rasi may be called உதய லக்னம். A Tamil Lagna Calculator uses the same birth-time, coordinates and sidereal zodiac geometry. For instance, Mesha Lagna is மேஷ லக்னம், Kanni Lagna is கன்னி லக்னம் and Thula Lagna is துலாம் லக்னம்.
Results display Tamil Rasi names alongside English transliterations. If you were born in Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kochi or Mumbai, choose the corresponding preset and verify that the local birth time is entered as recorded. For modern Indian birthplaces, Asia/Kolkata (IST) is the standard time zone, but historical rules must be checked for old records.
A Tamil Rasi Nakshatra reading and Tamil Lagna reading can differ because one uses the Moon's sky position while the other uses the rising eastern horizon. Neither should be substituted for the other.
Lagna vs Rasi vs Nakshatra vs Western Rising Sign
| Astrology concept | What it calculates | Essential inputs |
|---|---|---|
| Vedic Lagna / Ascendant | Sidereal ecliptic point rising on the eastern horizon | Birth time, latitude, longitude and historical time zone |
| Janma Rasi / Chandra Rasi | Sidereal Moon zodiac sign at birth | Birth time and historical time zone |
| Janma Nakshatra | Moon's lunar mansion (one of 27) and Pada | Birth time and historical time zone |
| Western Ascendant / Rising Sign | Often the tropical ecliptic point rising at the eastern horizon | Birth time, geographic coordinates and time zone |
| Western Sun Sign | Sun's tropical zodiac sector | Birth date and sometimes precise time near a boundary |
This tool displays Ascendant Nakshatra and Pada from the rising longitude as an additional geometric output. That is not your Moon-based Janma Nakshatra. Use our Rasi & Nakshatra Calculator to estimate Moon-sign and lunar birth-star results.
Understanding 12 Whole-Sign Houses from Lagna
In a whole-sign house interpretation, the entire Lagna sign becomes House 1, followed by the next zodiac sign for House 2 and so on. For example, if your Lagna is Kanya (Virgo), the first house is Kanya, the second is Tula, the third is Vrischika and the twelfth is Simha.
The result panel provides a complete 12-house sign-only grid. It does not calculate planetary longitudes, lunar nodes, dashas, Navamsa (D9), strength analysis or a full personalised Kundli. Other house division methods, such as equal or Placidus, can produce different house boundaries and should not be mistaken for the whole-sign list.
Always separate mathematical house assignment from belief-based house meanings. An astrological house label is not a scientifically validated forecast of a relationship, illness, career success or major life decision.
Which Ayanamsa Does This Vedic Lagna Calculator Use?
The calculator uses approximately Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa in a sidereal zodiac. It first calculates a tropical ascendant using the real-time astronomical sidereal angle and true obliquity in Astronomy Engine, then subtracts a precession-based Lahiri-style angular correction from the tropical result.
This is a documented approximation rather than the official Swiss Ephemeris Lahiri (SE_SIDM_LAHIRI) mode. Model and reference-frame choices can change the numerical value by small amounts. For very close sign boundaries, those differences may change the resulting Lagna. Compare professional calculations using exactly the same birth coordinates, historical UTC conversion and chosen ayanamsa if precision matters.
For detailed background, consult the Swiss Ephemeris documentation and the open-source astronomy library. These references explain the technical foundation; they do not certify the CalcuPortal output as identical to Swiss Ephemeris.
Can I Find My Lagna Without Birth Time?
Not reliably. Unlike a rough Western sun-sign lookup, the rising horizon moves through signs throughout a day. On average the ascendant changes sign roughly every two hours, but the actual span can be shorter or longer depending on latitude, seasonal orientation and the ecliptic.
Without a birth time, there are many possible Lagna values across the day. Entering a guessed noon time would create a misleadingly definite result. This calculator therefore requires a recorded or intentionally estimated time, and displays nearby time checks so users can see how sensitive the result is.
If the birth certificate gives an uncertain hour, consider reviewing medical or family records and comparing the nearby calculation rather than treating one number as definitive. Advanced “birth time rectification” used in astrology is not an objectively verified method and is not provided by this calculator.
Common Mistakes When Calculating Vedic Lagna
- Using today's home location instead of birthplace: Lagna calculations need geographic latitude and longitude at birth.
- Using only a birth date: without time, the rising sign cannot be narrowed to one valid result.
- Confusing AM and PM: changing the clock time by 12 hours can produce an entirely different rising sign.
- Entering the wrong longitude sign: use east-positive and west-negative degrees.
- Ignoring historical daylight saving: a past local clock time cannot always be converted with a present-day fixed offset.
- Confusing tropical and sidereal: Western rising sign and Vedic Lagna can differ due to ayanamsa.
- Calling ascendant Nakshatra the birth star: Moon-based Janma Nakshatra is a different quantity.
- Assuming exact precision: this page uses approximate Lahiri correction and presets with city-centre coordinates.
- Interpreting astrology as a guaranteed prediction: astronomical coordinates do not establish personality or future outcomes.
Lagna Calculator Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find my Lagna by date of birth, time and place?
Enter your exact birth time and date, choose birthplace coordinates and time zone, and calculate. The tool derives the rising tropical ecliptic longitude from local sidereal angle, latitude and obliquity, then subtracts approximate Lahiri ayanamsa to display the Vedic sidereal Lagna.
Can I calculate Lagna without knowing my birth time?
No single Lagna can responsibly be assigned without a birth-time estimate. Ascendants change repeatedly through the day, so this tool requests a time and shows ±5/15/30-minute sensitivity.
Is my Lagna the same as my Janma Rasi or Nakshatra?
No. Lagna is the rising ecliptic sign, Janma Rasi the sidereal Moon sign, and Janma Nakshatra the Moon's birth-star sector.
What is the difference between tropical and sidereal Ascendant?
Tropical longitude is measured against the equinox, while sidereal Lagna subtracts an ayanamsa. This tool shows both longitudes using an approximate Lahiri convention.
Is Lahiri ayanamsa exact in this calculator?
No. This is a close approximation, not an exact Swiss Ephemeris Lahiri implementation. Near a sign boundary, consult an authoritative Panchang or full ephemeris.
Does latitude and longitude matter for Lagna?
Yes. Longitude affects local sidereal time and latitude affects the eastern-horizon intersection. The birthplace coordinates matter even when you know the correct time zone.
What are Lagna degree and Lagna lord?
The Lagna degree is the rising sidereal longitude measured within its 30° zodiac sign. The lord is that sign's traditional planetary ruler, such as Mars for Mesha and Venus for Vrishabha.
How does the 12-house chart work?
This page displays whole-sign houses: the Lagna sign is House 1 and the following signs become Houses 2 to 12. It does not calculate planetary positions or a full Kundli.
Is Ascendant Nakshatra my Janma Nakshatra?
No. Ascendant Nakshatra is determined by rising ecliptic longitude. Janma Nakshatra is determined by Moon longitude at birth.
Is a Lagna astrology reading scientifically proven?
No. The rising astronomical point is calculable, but claims that it predicts human personality, marriage, health or career are not scientifically validated.
