A quick guide
Your Western zodiac sign, often called your sun sign or star sign, is the zodiac sector occupied by the Sun at birth. A full birth date is a better starting point than a month alone.
The twelve signs
This zodiac dates chart is a quick reference. The dates are conventional ranges, not exact boundaries for every year. Use the calculator above for your birth date and time zone.

When dates are not enough
A cusp is the boundary between two signs. The Sun crosses it at a particular instant, not automatically at midnight. For example, a March 20 birthday may fall in Pisces or Aries depending on the year, local time and time zone.
This calculator checks the beginning and end of your local birth date. When a sign change occurs, the timeline shows the sign before and after the transition. If you know your time, the tool uses that moment. If you do not, it preserves both possibilities.
Near a computed transition, small errors in the recorded birth time or astronomical model can affect the answer. Treat the displayed changeover minute as an estimate.
Different questions, different calculations
Searching for “zodiac sign by date of birth” can mean different things. This page answers the Western tropical Sun-sign question. A different result from an Indian horoscope is not automatically a mistake.
The Sun’s place in the tropical zodiac. This is the sign calculated on this page.
Available hereJanma Rashi refers to the Moon’s sidereal sign in common Vedic usage. It uses another body and reference system.

A separate calculationChinese zodiac animals are another system, usually associated with the lunar-calendar birth year. This Western zodiac calculator does not calculate Chinese zodiac signs or a complete birth chart.
Behind the result
We convert your entered local date and time to UTC, calculate the Sun’s apparent geocentric ecliptic longitude with Astronomy Engine, and divide the 360° tropical zodiac into twelve 30° sectors. Aries begins at 0°, Taurus at 30° and so on. The calculation uses the Sun’s centre and the equinox of date.
For an unknown time, the calculator checks the whole local calendar day. A displayed degree is only provided when a birth time is supplied; we do not present a guessed noon position as your birth position. Regional time zones use your browser’s historical time-zone data. The manual UTC option uses the offset you select, including any daylight-saving adjustment.
Astronomy Engine documents a target accuracy of roughly one arcminute. That supports a useful Sun-sign calculation, but it is not a guarantee at the exact boundary. We flag timed results within 0.02° of a sign boundary. The tool supports birth dates from 1900 to today; very old local time records and unusual clock changes may require a manually verified offset.
Astrology’s personality interpretations and predictions are not scientifically established. The astronomical position and the cultural interpretation are different parts of this experience.

Your questions, answered
Enter your full birth date and select the time zone where you were born. Add your birth time if you know it, then select Find my zodiac sign. The tool calculates the Sun’s tropical longitude instead of matching your birthday to a fixed date range.
Yes. Leave “I know my birth time” unchecked. The calculator checks the Sun’s sign across your local birth date. If it stays in one sign, you get that sign. If it changes, you get both possibilities and the estimated changeover time.
In everyday Western horoscope usage, zodiac sign and star sign usually mean the Sun sign. A full birth chart also has a Moon sign, rising sign and other placements; they are not calculated here.
A printed chart uses approximate calendar ranges. The Sun crosses each sign boundary at a particular time, and that moment varies between years. Your birth time and time zone can therefore change the result near a boundary.
At a particular instant, the centre of the Sun has one tropical sign. If your birth time is unknown on a transition day, two signs may be possible. That is uncertainty about the time, not a thirteenth or combined zodiac sign.
No. This is a Western tropical Sun-sign calculator. In common Indian birth-chart usage, Janma Rashi is the Moon’s sidereal sign. A Rashi calculator uses a different celestial body and zodiac reference, so a different result is expected.
This geocentric Sun-sign calculation needs the correct time zone or recorded UTC offset, not latitude and longitude. Choose the zone in effect at your birthplace. Coordinates are needed for other calculations such as the rising sign.
The tool uses Astronomy Engine to calculate the Sun’s apparent geocentric ecliptic longitude. Its documented accuracy target is about one arcminute, not perfect precision. Results very close to a boundary and birth times that are uncertain should be checked with a detailed ephemeris. Sign-change times are approximate.
February 29 is normally Pisces in the tropical zodiac. Enter your actual leap-year birth date for a calculated result. The form rejects February 29 in non-leap years.
The calculator processes the inputs in your browser and does not send them to a calculation server or put them in a share URL. Copy and download actions include the result and the date/time settings you entered, so review them before sharing. The site’s general privacy policy still applies.
