Final Grade Calculator - Calculate Your Course Grade and Final Exam Score

The Final Grade Calculator helps you calculate your current course grade, weighted assignment average, and the score you need on your final exam to reach a target grade. It is useful for students who want to plan their final exam preparation before the semester ends.

You can use this calculator in two ways. First, enter assignment grades and weights to calculate your current weighted grade. Second, enter your current grade, target grade, and final exam weight to find the final exam score required.

What is a Final Grade Calculator?

A Final Grade Calculator is an online grade planning tool that estimates your course result using assignment scores, exam marks, project grades, and grade weights. It helps students understand how much each graded task affects the final course grade.

Instead of manually calculating weighted averages, you can enter your scores and weights into the calculator and get an instant grade result.

How to Use the Weighted Grade Calculator

  1. Enter each assignment, quiz, project or exam name.
  2. Enter the grade you received for each task.
  3. Enter the weight of each task as a percentage.
  4. Click Calculate Grade.
  5. Check your current weighted grade, letter grade and remaining weight.

How to Use the Final Exam Calculator

  1. Enter your current grade in the course.
  2. Enter the final grade you want to achieve.
  3. Enter the weight of your final exam.
  4. Click Calculate Final Needed.
  5. Check the score you need on the final exam.

Final Grade Formula

The final grade formula uses your current course grade, your final exam score, and the final exam weight.

Final Grade = Current Grade × (1 - Final Weight) + Final Exam Grade × Final Weight

Here, final weight should be used as a decimal. For example, if the final exam is worth 40%, use 0.40 in the formula.

Final Exam Score Needed Formula

To calculate the grade you need on the final exam, the formula can be rearranged like this:

Required Final Score = [Target Grade - Current Grade × (1 - Final Weight)] / Final Weight

This is the same logic used by most final grade calculators. It helps you know whether your target grade is easy, challenging, or not possible without extra credit.

Example Final Grade Calculation

Suppose your current grade is 88%, your target grade is 85%, and your final exam is worth 40% of the course grade.

Required Final Score = [85 - 88 × (1 - 0.40)] / 0.40
Required Final Score = [85 - 52.8] / 0.40 = 80.5%

This means you need about 80.5% on the final exam to finish the course with an 85% overall grade.

Weighted Grade Formula

Weighted grade calculation is used when assignments, tests and projects have different importance in the course. For example, homework may be worth 10%, projects 30%, and exams 60%.

Weighted Grade = Sum of (Grade × Weight) / Sum of Weights

If all weights add up to 100%, the result shows your overall grade. If the weights do not add up to 100%, the calculator still shows your weighted average for the completed tasks and the remaining weight.

Letter Grade Scale

Different schools and colleges may use different grading scales. The table below shows a common percentage-to-letter grade reference.

S.No Percentage Range Letter Grade Meaning
1 90% - 100% A Excellent
2 80% - 89% B Good
3 70% - 79% C Average
4 60% - 69% D Needs Improvement
5 Below 60% F Failing

When Should You Use This Calculator?

You can use this calculator before exams, after receiving assignment scores, or while planning your study schedule. It helps you identify which tasks have the highest grade impact.

  • To calculate your current weighted average.
  • To find the score needed on a final exam.
  • To check if a target grade is still possible.
  • To compare different final exam score scenarios.
  • To plan study time based on grade impact.

What If I Need More Than 100% on the Final?

If the calculator shows that you need more than 100% on the final exam, your target grade may not be possible through the final exam alone. In that case, check whether your course offers extra credit, dropped assignments, retakes, bonus marks, or grade replacement options.
