IPL Points System and Playoff Qualification Explained

Updated October 17, 2026

The IPL league table ranks teams using points earned during the league stage. A win earns two points, a loss earns zero, and an abandoned match without a result normally gives one point to each team. The official playing conditions specify the treatment of tied matches and the rules for calculating league standings.

What Happens When Teams Have Equal Points?

When teams finish level on points, the published league-table rules compare the number of wins first. If teams remain level, net run rate (NRR) is an important tie-breaker. NRR compares a team's scoring rate with the rate it concedes across the league stage, using the method set out in the official playing conditions.

NRR can change substantially after a large win or loss. Teams therefore have an incentive to keep scoring and take wickets throughout a match. For official standings, use the current IPL table rather than calculating positions from incomplete results.

How the IPL Playoffs Work

  1. Qualifier 1: The first- and second-placed teams play; the winner advances directly to the final.
  2. Eliminator: The third- and fourth-placed teams play; the losing team is eliminated.
  3. Qualifier 2: The loser of Qualifier 1 faces the Eliminator winner for the second final place.
  4. Final: The winners of Qualifier 1 and Qualifier 2 play for the championship.

Why Finishing in the Top Two Matters

A top-two finish offers two chances to reach the final. A third- or fourth-placed team must win an elimination match and then Qualifier 2. The league stage is therefore not only about qualifying for the top four; the exact finishing position can also matter.
